The last Hurricane to hit Barbados was in 1955. Barbados, the last island in
the Caribbean chain, seems
to avoid the terrible weather
that plagues many island in
the Caribbean.
There is nothing but ocean seperating Barbados from Africa, and hurricanes start off the coast of Africa and head North about 100 miles off the coast of Barbados. Bajans will tell you that hurricanes always turn, and go around Barbados.
Clara, one of our bajan friends insists she and her fellow church members pray the hurricanes away. Hurricane Ivan was on course to directly hit Barbados, but turned South, a strange direction for a hurricane, and severely damaged the island of Grenada.
We know Clara was praying.
January to June is the dry season on the island of Barbados.
In July the summer and rainy season starts. Rain usually comes in quick showers, and followed by the sun within minutes. Heavy rains drain into the numerous underground lakes or into the sea.
Even on the hottest day, the tradewinds add a refreshing breeze. On average, there are over eight hours of SUN per day all year round. After the sun sets, the temperature turns pleasantly cool.
