U.S.-based spokespeople for the Grenada Board of Tourism said downed phone lines
made communication with the island nearly impossible, but unconfirmed reports of severe damage to some area resorts had been received.
The Coyaba Beach Resort,
the Blue Orchid Hotel and
the Spice Island Beach
Resort have suffered
extensive structural damage.
LaSource resort in St. George, with 128 guests still on site, sustained no major structural damage and only minimal damage to the roof.

Prime Minister Keith Mitchell Declares
Grenada a natural
disaster with 85% destruction.
The Prime Minister's residence, along with thousands of Grenadians, was destroyed and the Minister has been housed on a British navy frigate, the HMS Richmond.
The Richmond and HMS Wave Ruler were on patrol
in the Caribbean, and sailors are assisting with the relief operation.

Caribbean Tourism Private Sector Joins Hurricane
Relief Effort
The Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA)
is finalizing logistics to organize a relief effort with its federation of 35 national hotel associations, for the people of Grenada. Details are expected to be released shortly. CHA is preparing to evacuate visitors stranded on the island and secure alternate lodging in the region.

Grenada Temporarily Suspending Relief Shipments
The suspension is being implemented to allow for the strengthening of security to provide safety of passage for goods and equipment arriving in the country. Every police station on the island has been damaged, and looting has become a real concern.
Law enforcement from Trinidad and Barbados are actively working to get the situation under control by Sunday, September 12.

Grenada Has Access to Radio Stations
Barbados and Trinidad are providing the void left by the Grenadian broadcast media.
The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, headquartered in Barbados, has expanded its 900 AM service to broadcast the power of its transmitter to effectively cover the entire island. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency
(CDERA) will be feeding all official information through CBC 900 AM to residents of Grenada and its dependencies.
In Tobago, Radio Tambrin will also be broadcasting official information to Grenada and its dependencies on the FM frequency on 92.1 FM.

UNICEF has also launched a $1.5-million emergency appeal to help victims of Ivan.
The international children's organization is helping with school-in-a-box kits, tents for school sites and recreational kits for children in shelters.
They are also helping children and families traumatized by the destruction left by the hurricane.
Many families in Grenada are sending their children to Barbados and Trinidad to start the school year. Schools in Grenada have been badly damaged or destroyed.

The Federation has chartered a plane in Panama to carry much need supplies to Grenada: hygiene kits, plastic sheeting, tents, jerry cans, bed sheets, generators, lamps, water filters, water bottles, electric adaptors, tool sets, first aid kits, canned foods, clothing and phones.

The International Red Cross reports Grenada General Hospital is low on water. The Princess Alice Hospital was evacuated when part of the roof collapsed. There is a critical need for antibiotics and diarrheaol medication and relief personnel.

Just rumors, reportsDeputy Director of CEDERA. Over 30 shelters have been surveyed, nurses and doctors have
been working long hours to prevent outbreaks. Over 300 people have been treated for minor cuts and bruises. The island needs more medical staff, but there are limited accommodations to house them. CEDERA reports on the ground operations are getting better organized.

Former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, will visit Grenada Oct 14 to tour the island and offer rebuilding assistance from "Habitat for Humanity" which is headed by former President Carter.
Carter urged the United States and other international lenders Friday to forgive part of Grenada's debt, saying the Caribbean country needs the money to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Ivan.

President Bush signed a disaster bill clearing the way for $100 million in aid to help Grenada, Jamaica, Haiti and other Caribbean countries trying to recover from four major hurricanes.
During a visit to Grenada last week, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Grenada would receive the largest portion of the Caribbean aid.
