For Barbadian cultural flavor, there's nothing better than the Friday night Oistins fish fry, just off the beach in the heart of the islands most active fishing village. By day, the public fish market keeps this southern village bustling, but by night, the large adjacent open area jumps with action, people and the aroma of fresh fish frying in pots or sizzling on the grill. The Oistins fish market, on the island of Barbados, has long been an important fishing depot. Tiny boats would return from fishing expeditions and offload their catch on the docks behind the market while vendors jostled for the choicest fish. Then eight years ago, someone began deep frying fresh fish on Friday nights at a spot just beyond the docks. This ambitious idea envolved into the biggest social gathering on Barbados. Nowadays, Oistins hops nightly, presenting an excellent taste of Barbadian culture, with every type of fish, cooked any way you like it. This venue is the perfect blend of locals and visitors, all seated together at the tables, eating healthy and chatting the night away - it's Barbados fishing culture for all to enjoy.

Oistins is a small fishing village located on the South coast of the island. No matter which side of the island visitors are staying, a visit to Oistins is a must.

Every Friday you'll find an outdoor street fair with the the best barbecued chicken, flying fish, fish cakes, sweet potato, macaroni pie, coleslaw and other island delights. There's also musical entertainment, and opportunity to meet hundreds of visitors and locals. An average meal costs about $5.00, and the portions are quite large, so you will get full.
Aside from honoring the local fishing industry, the festival offers calypso and reggae music, local arts and crafts, and the popular fish boning and grease pole competitions.
